  7.     Sean Penn used to be Hollywood's surliest young actor, but
  8. that's no longer true, since Penn is neither an actor nor all
  9. that surly anymore. He's given up acting, and fighting
  10. photographers, to focus on directing, and the switch from
  11. smashing cameras to sitting behind one suits him just fine.
  12. "Directing is seeing an original vision all the way through,"
  13. says Penn, whose impressive debut film, The Indian Runner, opens
  14. this week. "I don't want to act again unless it's for money I
  15. can put into directing." The new Penn can even joke about his
  16. stormy marriage to Madonna. Last week he told David Letterman,
  17. "That was only a rumor. She and I never met."
